Over the years I've seen a few other software products that seemed to want to fit into the niche (names I seem to recall: SuperJam, JamStix.) but none of them really ever grabbed me.

(It is not, however a full DAW or really even close.

Use that vocal and then generate harmonies off it using the track's chord changes? It can do that, too. In retrospect, it probably would have been quicker to do it with the ol' gray matter, but, you know, you got a hammer the world looks like a nail.) Record a vocal along with it? It can do it. I've only used that aspect once and actually took parts of two or three solos and combined them. Don't want to take time to come up with your own solo or melody line? It can generate that (YMMV. Don't have a set of changes in mind, it can generate all sorts of types of changes in various styles and complexities. Just want a quick MIDI arrangement for a set of changes in a given style, it can do it. It seems like a no brainer to me for someone to do something similar, or for other DAWs to offer BiaB functionality.I think at least one aspect of this is that BiaB has been doing it so long it's got a pretty large and well developed feature set. It seems crazy to me that it's the only option. It's a wee slice of the 80s brought forward. But mapped to good sounds - and maybe tinkered a little by a good hand with MIDI - and it can sound pretty darn good.īut that UI is clunky and there's likely to be some real culture shock for first time users. Hook it up to a cheezy old soundcard synth and it can sound like a Casio demo. People would get the idea.)īut I will say that, like any MIDI arrangement, how it sounds will depend hugely on what synth sounds you map it to. heh Certainly, you could use it as a placeholder in a quick demo. (Except to say that the pedal steel demo video sounded better than any virtualized pedal steel I've heard, which is to say, almost usable. I'm a few versions back, on BiaB 2005 -no 'real instruments' in mine - so I can't weigh in on those. Those whose interest is, say, primarily in hip hop or electronica may not find much of interest, while country, rock, or pop songwriters or those wishing to practice/jam over tin pan alley or jazz type changes may find it much more satisfying. It's definitely not something that's for everybody.

Those of us who know (and love?) BiaB can forget just how clunky the UI may feel to folks. I would strongly recommend anyone considering it check them out, first.

I've seen a number of other quick-music softwares out there but none as flexible or useful - or as dorky looking heh - as BiaB.īiaB doesn't have a trial demo (as far as I can tell) but there are a number of video demos and such. Since you simply type in chord names (and it can take highly complex chords) and click the generate button (which, as noted, is pretty much instantaneous), BiaB is extremely useful for those who know their way around and want to experiment with more sophisticated substitutions and such. Stuff like ACID or Garageband can be useful - but that approach can't offer the same, turn-on-a-dime airballing ease and utility. (One of the bossa styles not working for you? Try another or jump to a cumbia or eurodisco or.

What is it that that program does that you want?Ĭan't you just use Garageband for simple songwriting things? And maybe upgrade later to Logic Express or Logic Studio?I can well understand the disdain that the Tonka-toy, 80s style interface - with its jumble of iconized buttons - engenders.īut Band in a Box can be a great tool for practicing, as a songwriting sketchpad, and for very quickly roughing out MIDI arrangements.īecause of its apparent roots in jazz education, it's well oriented to turning fake book type lead and chord charts into back tracks at the push of a button. And from the screenshots I've seen I'll never try it either.
